When evaluating concrete surface preparation, subfloor restoration, and floor finishing, leveling and polishing methods are categorized by depth of cut, aggregate exposure, Sheen level, and material chemistry.

1. Types of Concrete Leveling (Subfloor Restoration & Surface Prep)

Subfloor leveling corrects unevenness, sloping, pits, and structural imperfections prior to diamond polishing or applying protective resinous coatings.

A. Self-Leveling Cementitious Overlays (SLUs)

Polymer-modified cementitious mixtures are poured over compromised or uneven subfloors to achieve a dead-level surface.

  • Underlayment Levelers: Applied as a flat base layer strictly beneath secondary floor coverings like tile, luxury vinyl plank, or hardwood.

B. Mechanical Surface Grinding & Milling

C. Polyurethane Foam & Slab Raising

Injecting expanding structural polyurethane foam or cement slurry beneath sunken or unlevel concrete slabs to raise them back to grade without demolition.

2. Types of Concrete Polishing (By Aggregate Exposure Level)

According to industrial standards, mechanical concrete polishing is divided into 4 distinct aggregate exposure levels depending on how deep diamond abrasives grind into the concrete matrix:

Level 2: Salt-and-Pepper Exposure (Fine Aggregate)

  • Depth: 1 – 2 mm
  • Visual: Light diamond grinding removes the cream layer to expose tiny sand grains and fine aggregate particles. Ideal for hiding everyday dust and minor wear in high-traffic zones.

Level 3: Medium Aggregate Exposure

  • Depth: 2 – 3 mm
  • Visual: Deepens the cut to reveal a balanced blend of fine sand and medium stone aggregates across the floor.

Level 4: Full Aggregate Exposure (Deep Grind / Terrazzo Style)

Polishing levels are also classified by surface gloss, dictated by the final resin-bond diamond grit size used during processing:
