1. The Concrete Substrate & Moisture Mitigation Layer
While technically the base beneath the coating, the concrete slab is the foundational component of the entire system.
- Mechanical CSP Profile: Concrete mechanically profiled via diamond grinding to a Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) 2 or 3 to provide an open pore matrix for adhesion.
- Epoxy Moisture Vapor Barrier (MVB): A 100% solids, specialized moisture-tolerant epoxy primer applied when relative humidity (RH) inside the concrete exceeds safety thresholds. It stops moisture emissions from pushing up through the slab and causing blisters or delamination.
2. The Dark Epoxy Base / Primer Coat
Metallic pigments are semi-translucent; light passes through them and reflects off the layer underneath.
- High-Contrast Base: Typically a 100% solids jet-black or charcoal-pigmented epoxy primer.
- Light Reflectivity & Depth: The dark background acts as an absorption barrier, trapping light that passes through the clear metallic matrix and bouncing back only the shimmer of the suspended metallic particles. Without a dark primer, metallic floors look washed out and thin.
- Capillary Sealing: Fully seals concrete pores to prevent outgassing bubbles from rising into the thick metallic body coat.
3. The 100% Solids Clear Epoxy Binder
This component forms the thick structural “body coat” (applied between 30 to 40 wet mils) that houses the metallic effect.
- Part A (Epoxy Resin): Ultra-clear, low-viscosity liquid resin (typically Bisphenol A/F resin formulations) engineered for optical clarity.
- Part B (Hardener / Curing Agent): Formulated with cycloaliphatic polyamine technology. Cycloaliphatic hardeners provide extended working times, low viscosity for self-leveling, high chemical/impact resistance, and reduced tendency to yellow or amine-blush compared to standard aliphatic or polyamide hardener agents.
- Zero VOC / 100% Solids: Contains no solvent or water evaporants, meaning the thickness poured wet is the exact thickness retained when fully cured.
4. Metallic Pigment Powders
The visual engine of the system. These are finely ground nanoparticles suspended directly into the clear epoxy binder.
- Mica & Metal Oxide Composition: Microscopic flakes of natural or synthetic mica finely coated with metal oxides (such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide).
- Dimensional Suspension: Because the mica flakes vary in weight and shape, they orient themselves at different angles and depths as the resin cures. When ambient light strikes the surface, it refracts at varying angles, creating the signature 3D visual movement resembling molten lava, running water, or polished marble.
5. Protective High-Wear Topcoat
Pure epoxy resin provides structural strength, but its surface is relatively soft and prone to UV ambering and micro-scratching. A high-performance topcoat acts as a sacrificial shield.
- Aliphatic Polyaspartic or Polyurethane Sealers: 100% aliphatic clear coats that are completely UV-stable (will not turn yellow in sunlight) and offer superior abrasion and hot-tire pickup resistance.
- Traction Control Additives: Micronized polymer beads or ultra-fine aluminum oxide micro-spheres are blended into this topcoat layer to ensure slip-resistance without clouding the optical depth of the metallic layer below. Review our guide on Flooring Compliance & Safety Standards for details on commercial traction requirements.
